hermits..

We have been extremely hermit-like since the beginning of last weekend, and I blame HEROES. Last year I put off watching the series until after I had finished studying because I knew I would get too hooked. We started season 1 last weekend and finished watching Season 2 yesterday afternoon (total = 34 episodes). Loved it and now playing the waiting game for next season to start. In other news for your viewing pleasure – a Hollywood remake of the Korean movie “My Sassy Girl” is set for release in Singapore this Thursday. Let’s just say that I have pretty low expectations of it, but I’m still dying to see it since I loved the original so much. The only thing I ask is that it is much better than “The Lake House” which was a Hollywood remake (Sandra Bullock/Keanu Reeves) that completely butchered the original Korean movie “Il Mare”.

In keeping with the hermit-like theme, last night we decided to eat in, and both mrQ and I cooked. I made what is normally a really yummy chicken and corn soup which uses fresh corn, minced chicken, chicken stock and cream corn. Unfortunately, the cream corn we bought here bears no resemblance to cream corn I would find back in Oz. It’s much more watery and thin, and the final product was what I would refer to as very “un-hearty”. I rated it a 3 out of 10 as it was still edible and the taste was okay. mrQ had decided to make a malaysian curry using curry powder out of a packet with no instructions (Earthen Pot Chicken Curry Powder). After toiling over a hot stove for an hour, we ended up with the worst curry we have ever tasted (1 out of 10). We were both agreed on this and I concluded that if you have no clue what you’re doing with curries, then don’t even bother. So we bombed out on both counts – pretty unusual since mrQ is usually pretty handy in the kitchen. I was chucking out the leftover soup today and somehow ended up with corn kernels all over myself and the floor. It just wasn’t meant to be.

  1. i implore you to try A1 Instant Curry Paste made by A1 Best One Food Industry. You cannot go wrong and it is the best malaysian curry paste ever. It’s a bit hard to find here- but you should be able to get it easily in Singas. Mum bought me back some when they were in Malaysia.

  2. ronnie: Doesn’t sound like you can go wrong with a product from made by “The A1 Best One Food Industry”! Will check it out in the supermarket and let you know how our next attempt goes. Hope you’re well and eating right!

  3. Hey! I found the A1 brand, but couldn’t find the instant curry paste. I found bak kut teh, and other assorted packets though. Will keep a look out still. The brand name reminds me of seeing chinese restaurants that call themselves “Best Chinese Restaurant”.

  4. Definitely keep looking- it’s worth it. Mum bought me back some bak kut teh as well which was for some reason much nicer when she cooked it than i, even though i used dried mushrooms and tofu as well. I have noticed that there is a copy cat brand also with a big A1 on the packet but the proper one comes in an orangey/red packet, not yellow. Do not be fooled by imitations!
Yes. They love to add a “best” in their name. Either that or “excellent” like the “excellent seafood restaurant” in carlingford.

  5. Yep, I’ve been to that restaurant..they make a mean crab!
